What is Exit Intent?

Exit Intent is an online marketing strategy designed to help reduce your bounced traffic and recover lost sales. It does this by tracking the location of your visitors mouse movements to detect behavior that likely means they’re about to leave. When their cursor moves up towards the close button or location bar it usually means a person is about to leave your website. This can be a valuable trigger for a popup.

This technology works well with a variety of marketing solutions, for example:

  • Offering a discount
  • Shopping cart not empty reminder
  • Prompting a visitors to subscribe
  • Promotions

And more…

Sensitivity

Create a threshold in which your visitors cursor speed must surpass before the Exit Intent trigger is fired. The cursor must reach a specified minimum speed indicated as Pixel Per Millisecond (PPMS) in the campaign settings of the Exitget dashboard. If the users cursor speed is less than the defined PPMS Exit Intent will not trigger. The default has been set to zero seconds so that the cursor exiting at any speed will trigger the Exit Intent. Variation in speed of the cursor could indicate the intention of the visitors. A/B testing the perfect sensitivity for your situation is our recommended strategy.

Detection direction

Traditionally Exit Intent only detects mouse movement toward the top of your browser. This may not always be how the visitor leaves your site. For example the bottom and sides of a window can be used to access the applications on a computer, which could be used as a way to navigate away from your site. Simply change your Exit Intent algorithm to detect “Any Direction” to enable detection of the cursor leaving your site from the top, bottom, left and right.
